Around 30 staff and students from New College Lanarkshire attended the awards which were hosted at the Grosvenor Cinema on Ashton Lane, Glasgow this year. We were treated to an Oscars style ceremony in the luxurious surroundings of screen 1.  After a short introduction to the day from BIPP Scotland Chairman, Jon Lee, we were treated to a video showreel of the shortlist and winners in each category.

New College Lanarkshire’s success for the day did not end there however…

The professional awards were announced at the same event which includes categories for commissioned work undertaken as part of a photographer’s professional practice.  Additionally, there are a number of categories for work which is non-commissioned and may have come from personal projects.

The auditorium was filled with cheers of celebration as it was announced the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in the Non-Commissioned Single Image category for professionals were awarded to our very own Lewis Napier, Curriculum and Quality Leader for Art, Design & Photography!

Lewis’ images featuring a study of flowers and a fashion shot featuring one of our HNC students, Wiktoria Kwinta, all shot as personal projects for professional development had caught the judges’ eyes and gave Lewis the clean sweep within the category.

The fun didn’t stop there as after the final professional category was announced it was time to find out who the judges considered to have submitted the best overall entry within the professional awards.  Another opportunity arose for some whooping and cheering from the New College Lanarkshire as it was revealed Lewis was the BIPP Scotland Professional Photographer of the Year 2018.

Congratulations to all of the winners from New College Lanarkshire and also to all the other winners from the region.  The selection of final images highlight just how high the standard of photography is in Scotland.  Judges had the difficult task of choosing the winners from almost 700 entries this year.  Commenting in particular about the student awards the judges mentioned that they saw so many “great ideas which had been executed fantastically” and suggested that many of the entrants would have no problem finding work within the photographic industry right now.
